Why ChatGPT Doesn't Know Your Business Exists
If ChatGPT doesn't know your business exists, it doesn't necessarily mean you've got a problem with your Google rankings. In fact, it's possible that your business has a strong presence in Google's ecosystem, but it's not showing up on some of the public sources and web pages that AI tools can discover.
If you're a plumber, HVAC company, electrician, or another local business, this is a big deal, because your customers aren't only searching Google anymore. They're asking ChatGPT and other AI tools questions like "Who is a good plumber near me?" and "Which HVAC companies serve this area?"
The important bit is that these AI systems don't all work the same way. In this guide, we'll help you understand how ChatGPT cites webpages in AI results, why Google can know your business when ChatGPT doesn't, and how to check whether AI tools know your business.

Doesn't ChatGPT Just Use Google?
No, ChatGPT doesn't just use Google!
OpenAI says ChatGPT Search uses third-party search providers as well as content from its partners. Plus, it's got its own search crawler that can discover public websites. But OpenAI isn't saying that ChatGPT Search just uses Google's index, or that it relies specifically on Yelp, the BBB, or Bing Places.
Google's setup is different. Its AI search features are built on top of its existing search systems, and Google specifically recommends keeping your Business Profile information up to date for better visibility.
So there's a pretty important distinction to make here. You might have a Google Business Profile that's well optimized, with great Google visibility and good Google rankings, yet still find that ChatGPT doesn't know your company well enough to confidently recommend it.
Why Can Google Know My Business When ChatGPT Doesn't?
Your Google Business Profile gives Google a direct source of business information. Google says it compiles Business Profile information from sources including official websites, licensed third-party data, user contributions, and its own interactions with businesses.
ChatGPT Search works differently. OpenAI says any public website can potentially appear in ChatGPT Search, but your website needs to allow OAI-SearchBot if you want its content to be included in ChatGPT Search summaries and snippets.
So don't assume that Google visibility and AI visibility are the same thing. A lot of contractors might spend years perfecting their Google Business Profile, without ever thinking about how clearly the wider web explains who they are, where they work, and what services they provide.
Is Bing Places Worth Checking Too?
Yes, Bing Places is also worth checking out. We can't say that a Bing Places listing is a magic bullet that guarantees a mention in ChatGPT. But it's worth checking out because Bing is another major search ecosystem.
Microsoft says Bing Places lets you manage the info that shows up about your business in Bing Search and Bing Maps, including all the standard details like website, hours, and contact info. Microsoft also added the ability to import business information from Google Business Profile.
If you run a small business, that's a good reason not to think of Google as the only place where your business info needs to be accurate. Search your company name in Bing and check the listing to make sure the address, phone number, website, and services are all up to date. If there's anything missing or out of date, fix it.
Can ChatGPT Actually Access Your Website?
Whether or not ChatGPT can actually access your website is one of the first things we'd check.
OpenAI says website owners who want their content to be discovered and surfaced in ChatGPT Search should allow OAI-SearchBot to crawl their sites. If your robots.txt file blocks that crawler, pages from your own website might not be discoverable through ChatGPT Search.
That's different from GPTBot, which OpenAI says it uses to improve its models. OpenAI lets publishers control access for OAI-SearchBot and GPTBot separately.
In the world of AI visibility, that distinction is pretty important. Don't assume just because Google can crawl your site that every AI system can access it the same way.
Does Structured Data Help?
Most business websites lack structured data markup. If you're one of those, structured data is still worth doing, but there's a lot of overclaiming around this subject.
You'll find articles saying schema markup will make AI tools recommend your business, but there isn't enough primary evidence for us to promise that.
What we do know is that structured data gives machines a clear idea of what a page is all about. Google describes structured data as a standardized format for providing information about a page and classifying its content. Its LocalBusiness structured data can specify details such as a company name, address, telephone number, opening hours, and geographic information.
If you're a contractor, putting some LocalBusiness schema markup on your site can make it easier for machines to understand important business info.
Just remember that structured data isn't an AI visibility switch. Google says correctly implemented structured data doesn't guarantee that a particular search feature will appear.
What Else Should I Fix?
Start by making your business easy to understand without relying on any one platform. Get your company name, services, service areas, and contact info clear on your own website. Keep that info up to date and make sure important pages can actually be crawled.
Then, take a closer look beyond your website. Look on Bing Places and other relevant industry directories, and see if there's any information out there about your business that's incorrect. News articles, case studies, and genuine third-party mentions can give your brand some context, but no marketing agency can promise that these will magically make AI-generated answers mention you.
The real key to getting your business noticed is to create content that answers the actual questions your potential customers are asking. Traditional SEO still matters here! Google says the same fundamental SEO best practices that apply to Google Search also apply to its AI features.
Plus, remove any outdated information. Many websites still contain info that's no longer relevant to their services, and you don't want this being cited by ChatGPT. Audit your website quarterly to make sure only current information is displayed.
How Do I Check Whether AI Tools Know My Business?
To check whether AI tools know your business, open ChatGPT and try asking it some questions like a real customer might ask.
Don't just type in your business name. Try asking questions like: "Who's the best emergency plumber in [city]?" or "Which electricians cover [area]?" Get creative with your questions and test a few different versions.
AI-generated answers aren't like static rankings, so you can't just assume one response is proof that your business is either visible or invisible. OpenAI says that model outputs can vary because there's always randomness in how the models respond. Plus, common business names can cause ambiguity in AI recognition, so this could affect how (or if) you're cited.
Do the same across multiple AI tools. You might find that your business shows up in one, but not in another. That's useful to know, as you want every tool to generate referral traffic to your site.
Don't Try To Fix It By Doing More AI SEO
If your business is invisible in ChatGPT, don't start by creating dozens of pages stuffed with phrases for AI models. Instead, you'll want to go back to the basics.
First off, make sure your business info is accurate across all the places it needs to be. Make sure the AI crawlers can find your website and access the info they need. Use structured data when you can. Build useful service and location pages. Keep your business info up to date. And earn some genuine third-party mentions when they make sense.
And keep working on Google too. Google explicitly says you don't need new machine-readable files or special AI text files to appear in its AI search features. The normal foundations of good SEO still apply.
